National Pet Week
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), this week is National Pet Week. This is the AVMA’s way of reminding us to be responsible pet owners and celebrate the special bond we have with our dogs and other pets. Some things you can do to pamper your pooch this week include:
• Check with your veterinarian to see if your dog is due for a visit. Dogs should see the vet at least once a year for a check-up and vaccinations. If you aren’t sure when the last time your pet saw the vet, give the office a call and make an appointment if necessary.
• Recommit yourself to spending at least an hour a day spending time with your dog. Bringing a new puppy or dog home is exciting, and often in the first few weeks of having our new pet we lavish him with attention, go for lots of walks, and spend lots of time cuddling and playing. It doesn’t take long for us to slip back into a normal routine, and our canine pals might find themselves getting a bit less attention. Make a point this week of recommitting yourself to your dog. Spend an hour each day on walks, playing, and snuggle time.
• Make a donation. There are lots of homeless pets out there who are victims of irresponsible owners. Think about making a donation to sponsor a homeless dog at your local animal shelter.
